Quetta: The arrest of Dr. Mahrang Baloch, head of the Baloch Yekjehti Committee (BYC), has been challenged in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Dr. Baloch was detained along with six others under public order laws.
Imran Baloch, a lawyer representing the detainees in the Balochistan High Court, told reportrs that he has filed a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of Dr. Baloch’s sister, Nadia Baloch.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch and other BYC activists — including Bebo Baloch, Gulzadi Baloch, Sabghatullah Shah Jee, and Bibarg Baloch — along with Ghaffar Qambarabi Baloch, a senior member of the National Party, were arrested just before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Following their arrests, more than 150 political workers were detained in Quetta during protests against the crackdown. However, the provincial home department later withdrew charges against these individuals, leading to their release.
An earlier constitutional petition challenging the arrests of Dr. Baloch and others under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance was dismissed by a two-member bench of the Balochistan High Court, consisting of former Chief Justice Ejaz Ahmed Swati and Justice Muhammad Aamir Rana. The court upheld the detention orders issued by the Deputy Commissioner.
While the Balochistan High Court ruling has now been challenged in the Supreme Court, Imran Baloch noted that the case has yet to be scheduled for a hearing. He also confirmed that the detention of Dr. Baloch and others has been extended for a third time.
